Welcome to Harvard Avenue Christian Church. We are delighted you are visiting our website. Please feel invited to participate in the many worship, fellowship, learning and spiritual growth opportunities we offer. Our History Harvard Avenue Christian Church began as an outreach of the Northeast District of the Christian Church of Oklahoma. It was a response to the southward expansion of Tulsa. Our first worship service was March 22, 1959 at McClure Elementary School with 66 people attending. At the close, 38 stepped forward to become our first charter members. The Rev. Robert Peake was our minister then and remained until his retirement in 1989. Our church continued to grow under the energetic and effective leadership of our next three senior ministers, Dr. Donald L. Lanier, Rev. Stephen C. Wallace and Rev. Kent Dorsey. Our present senior minister is Rev. Mark Briley. |
The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Our roots go back to the early 1800's when Scottish Presbyterians on the frontier of Pennsylvania and Kentucky troubled by the denominational feuding of that time, yearned for all Christians to be united in a simple New Testament faith. They began a movement which seeks to include rather than exclude. We are still committed to their dream: "In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberality; in all things, charity." We have no formal creed, but we confess a common faith that "Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and he is our Lord and Savior". People of many different backgrounds find their spiritual home here, because we value each person and celebrate the diversity in which God has made us. |
